Waiting to hear result of interview...

I interviewed early last week for a Lecturer position at a UK institution. They said they'd let us know something by Friday last week, but it's Wednesday and I haven't heard anything. I assume they have made an offer and are waiting an answer. What is an ok way (by UK standards) to ask them? I hate waiting!

E-mail the head on Friday (gives them a few extra days) and ask politely if there is any news.

Hi
How did you think it went? It would be helpful to hear your story!
OK - yes, it is usual to hear very swiftly and your assumption might be right here. It could be that they intend to write to unsuccessful candidates, rather than call them and in this case it would take longer. What exactly did they say about this?
But bear in mind that there are times when a decision does take longer, or that they have you might be a reserve candidate - this has happened to me after one interview (they phoned me to tell me this) and it really is agonising waiting. One thing you could do if the tension is unbearable is that you could contact HR now who should tell you your status - i.e. unsuccessful OR they can't say for sure as yet.
I am waiting to hear if I've been shortlisted and as I have been offered another post I phoned HR to check my status - to find out they still haven't shortlists and don't expect to do so until Friday. But HR were helpful and told me to call back on Friday.
Fingers crossed for you.

I emailed the contact person today and asked, still waiting for the answer.
The interview was in line with what I expected based on accounts of UK-style academic interviews on this forum and other media. I think I did ok, though they asked a few more hardball questions than I had anticipated (I think mostly to test my motivation to go there). All very quick. There's an internal candidate though, I met her at dinner. Good luck with your search!

Oh I hope you hear something soon - it is not nice to wait. And I do hope it isn't a shoe-in for the internal candidate...
Let us know how you get on.
All the best.
