Travel in Europe

I just returned from a UK/Europe trip. Here's how the luggage situation worked:
Leaving England
1. Hand luggage is allowed but it cannot be larger than 6 inches thick (think laptop case)
2. Only one piece of hand luggage per person. Women, if you have a laptop you will have to pack your pocketbook
3. No make-up, shampoo, toothpaste etc allowed in cabin. Toothbrush, yes... but not toothpaste.
4. Although according to the posted list, ball point pens were allowed, the airline I flew did not allow them
5. No drinks. But past security you can buy drinks and take them on board.
6. Cell/mobile phones and camera are now allowed in the cabin
7. Shoes off, laptop out of case (for the US this is usual) when going through security
8. Hand luggage subjected to complete search (everything out etc)
Flying out of Austria
1. Watches and belts off laptop out through security
Hand luggage wasn't checked to make sure I didn't have the prohibited items.
They didn't care that I had a laptop case AND a pocketbook.

Thanks, Expiate!
I have four more trips across the pond this school year and am still trying to figure out how to get the computer/scanner and all my research equipment packed safely.
If they let you have a 6 in wide computer case, I'll be OK!
Of course, I'll check again before I go.
