translation and interpreting certification

Anyone have any info on what one might do to become a certified translator of some kind?
Grad programs, certification classes, online programs?
A friend from overseas is here in the States looking for such programs in a small town in South Carolina and I know nothing really about it. Is there an association of translator/interpreters or some such?

The Monterrey Institute in California is an excellent school and good place to start looking. They offer an MA in translation and interpretation. The people there can advise your friend about certification or associations.

I would imagine there are many types of such things in the DC area. Our State Department could use some help.

Another option is the Certified Translation Professional (CTP) Designation Program.
