agree,course in logic 101 h.s.! self-studied smattering logic,includes math symbols deductions;if not math numerals- very interesting consistent to algebra letters. Y math? cause logics begs to find absolute certain correct pure ans. basis logistics science. did this self-study didactic 9 yrs. after h.s.;my roommate then said quote- watching me pour over introduction to logics textbook "have a 'math block' 'math fear' still admired my efforts.

Don't get me started on this. All I have read is the topic (sorry everyone). I feel SO STRONGLY about this that in the US 1 term of philosophy or logic should be REQUIRED in high schools. I went to "high school" in the EU and then college in the US and... I have seriously thought to run for my local school board just to make this happen. But now I am in the UK...

Why? Why does this [insert adjective & pronoun] exist at all? Another good question is, what did he/she/it pour over his intro-logic text? Perhaps it was maple syrup. Also, (sorry to be nitpicky) I would have said "[insert adjective and noun]," but maybe that's just me. |

I completely agree that high schools need Logic courses.
My basic frustration in teaching mathematics is that students only know how to mimic problems. They completely lack problem solving skills. By the time they get to college, they've already decided on the importance of learning critical thinking skills (usually they decide its not important).
In two of my lower division courses there are topics that require students to use the concept "if X is true then Y is true." Without fail, students have the most trouble with these topics, especially when they have to consider "if Y is not true then X is not true."
Logic used to be offered in HS, before students "had to" take AP Calculus. When I was in HS, Seniors took one of the two AP Calculus courses or Logic. When I was a freshman, about half of the Seniors were taking Logic. By the time I graduated in 1992, the enrollment was 1. By my 5 year reunion, Logic wasn't offered at all.

I went to a private school but the course offerrings were the same at my local public HS. My mom went to said public HS and took logic. At the time, it was the most advanced HS course. The pronounced aversion to advanced mathematics and logic often extends to the general education requirements in college (take a look at your own -- mine makes it easy to slip by w.o. anything more advanced than HS math).
Oh... as a mathematician, I am very aware of the lack of math requirement. In fact, at my college, the need for pre-calculus courses is so great that most of the faculty are teaching those courses that used to be taught by adjuncts and lecturers. In turn, we can't offer some of our major courses as frequently as we'd like. |
