I'll grant that my bottom 25% of women students do much, much better than my bottom 25% of men students, but I have just never encountered more than three or four of the type of male student that so many of you describe.  Granted, I've only been teaching five years, but I have taught at big state schools and schools with a dominant fraternity culture.  I did my undergrad at a state school where college sports were a big deal, and I didn't see these type of men in my classes or around me either.

I don't mean to be rude or difficult, but I'd really rather not be specific.  I teach a general-requirement course that pulls in students from all majors and walks of life, so I do get to encounter both students who are sympathetic to my discipline and students who are very, very hostile to it on a regular basis.
