I'm not sure what you mean about your last paragraph... something doesn't make sense.
I think some weird cut and paste bug came in....
But why did you quit astrophysics?
I couldn't subject my kids to a several years of poverty.
That's not very close to computer programming.
It actually is, not a large gap between numerical astrophysics and computer programming.
It's the job, isn't it? They keepo telling me that. With physics you'll either be a very brilliant scientist or a teacher or nothing.
This actually isn't true. The "good news" about physics Ph.D. is that if you define success in terms of having a decent job that will allow you to live a middle class lifestyle, then the Ph.D. is quote useful. The bad news is that the system forces you to leave academia if you that, but I'm trying to change the system. If I hadn't gotten sucked into quantitative finance, it would have been possible for me to still be a self-funded theoretical astrophysicist.
I know this is not very realistic, but eh. I've never cared much about money. I don't want to be poor either; just "moderate".
Kids changes things a lot. Also at some point, you just say to yourself that you are just sick and tired of not having the money to spend on something stupid like lunch at a nice restaurant, or a vacation somewhere.
