I posted this on the Research forum, but thought I'd cross post here, too:

Anyone on this forum at NIH or product of an NIH postdoc (who actually did postdoc in Bethesda)?  I wonder what it's like in the MD/DC area and what it's like being at the NIH as a postdoctoral research fellow?  I realize the NIH is huge and a lot depends on the lab you work in and who you work with.  I'm just after a general sense of the place and range of experiences.

I am clearly not the best person to respond to your query but I would say that having NIH on your CV would open significant doors in the future. The MD/DC areas are lovely, albeit expensive. If you're thinking long-term, any NIH gig (depending on how stressful their research requirements are going to be on you) would be a great thing to have on a resume.

MD/DC area is very nice. However, be very careful which lab you`d choose. I heard that especially at NOB, the boss is very arrogant, unhelpful, narrow-minded and that several postdocs` carrier has been severely damaged (no publications etc.)

Can you tell me where did you hear this, my experiences are completely different. Now I am really surprised.

"NIH postdoc" is far too broad to give you any indication of the experience. If you are considering a particular postdoc, ask the current and former lab members of their experience.

This question is meaningless. Ask about specific labs. Ask the current and former lab members. Quit cross posting.
