As a conservative Republican (a little further right then the middle but not an extremist), I find this topic fascinating. In 2002-2003, while getting my MLIS anytime I stated a conservative belief, thought or opinion classmates resorted to name-calling. I was called a Nazi, un-American, ignorant, foolish and naive. This also happened in professional setting. None of which are me! I grew up in a military family and firmly believe in the US government and Constitution. I feel  that the field of professional librarians seems intolerant of conservatives. It is unfortunate but I have not renewed my membership to the ALA because they do not stand for my beliefs and actually do not currently work as a librarian, partly because of the way I have been treated for having an opinion that does not comply with the liberal democrats beliefs. It is unfortunate since I love being a librarian, helping people gather information and become more knowledgable is extremely satisfying but not at the cost of denying my beliefs or being uncomfortable admitting them when asked my opinion.

Hang in there, lenox11.  There's a desperate need for "politically incorrect" librarians in this country.  If you stay in the profession, you'll definitely be going against the flow.  I'm not saying that the frustrations will be worth it.  I'm not saying that you will ultimately make much of a difference.  (Trying to change the ALA is like beating a dead horse; don't waste your time.)  But there are people out there--patrons and communities--who need librarians who haven't yet been brainwashed.  You are not alone!

lenox11,

i'm so glad you are able to stand up for your beliefs, even when they are in the minority in  your profession.  i hope it doesn't stop you from pursuing your chosen field in the long run!

It's nice to know that there are others who feel the same way I do. I do love being a librarian and once my kids start school, I will hopefully decide that my love for working in a library outweighs the politics...
