Are UK universities still interviewing job applicants and actually hiring people while the pay dispute is going on?  Michael Sterling mentioned that pay rise could cost jobs eventually.  Anyone knows if interviews or hiring decisions may be, or have been, affected by the current situation?

At my university they have put a freeze on hiring until the outcome of the strike and pay deal is known.

It has screwed us as we need new staff to cover for resignations and also it has screwed individuals who were interviewed and offered jobs just as the strike started but have now been told that they will not be sent contracts until the strike is over i.e. the job has disappeared (hopefull temporarily).

It hasn't affected us at all. We've just advertised a vacancy and will interview in June.

Just wanted to add that there is absolutely no basis for the claim that jobs will be lost--just a scare tactic.

I agree with the above. More bluster from the VCs I am afraid. We just okay'ed five new permanent lectureships. Can't be that cashstrapped...

I just got a job offer at an interview on Thursday.  Any VC who imposes a hiring freeze is merely posturing.

Let me also take the opportunity to express thanks for the support some of you have offered me over recent months - I'm the one whose department is being closed, and it now seems that I have landed on my feet.  I'm the first one out the door - thankfully not to be among my colleagues who will have to wind this place up...

Congrats!!!!! Are you able to remain in your house or does your new job require moving? I'm happy that you managed to land on your feet.

Thanks all.  Expat in UK: unfortunately I do have to move, and my partner is not happy - but it means moving north a bit, and so at least I'll get out of the SE and into a bigger house...
