Hi,
Anyone have any thoughts/experiences with living in Beirut and teaching at the American U. of Beirut? Thanks!

The university has a good reputation - faculty seem to be pretty stable and of course the location is beautiful. Am assured by friends / colleagues from Beirut and other towns in the country that the situation on the ground is also good in spite of the not so distant targeting of public figures /people in politics and media.
Have you been in the Mid East before?

Thanks, expat for the response. I have spent quite a bit of time in Istanbul and am a Pakistani-American, so I have experience living in the Muslim, if not Arab, world.

I know some folks who work at AUB and they seem to love it. Beirut is a fun, cosmopolitan town and as already noted the campus is beautiful and in a nice neighborhood. It's kind of an expensive city, but interesting place and good quality of life. Good luck!

AUB is a very good university. The students are usually among the best. The university has faculty housing next to the beach, so you might be interested in exploring that option. Beirut is a nice city; lots of good restaurants, movie theaters, cultural events.....however, it is relatively expensive, noisy and has traffic jams

I am considering going off to Beirut, too. When are you leaving and living there? I've done a lot of research and have heard nothing but great things.
I will be there for the spring, 2007.

Isn't it kinda dangerous to go and work in Beirut these days? Check with the Embassy about the safety. Good luck.
