I've got one coming up. Should you spend much time interacting with the other candidates? Are there special coping strategies for this kind of situation?

Stories or survival tips welcome.

Can you give us more information? I've never heard of a "group interview" for an academic job in the UK.

Do you just mean the normal thing, where all the candidates  turn up on the same day?

Make nice, you never know when paths might cross, they review something of yours, or are on an interview panel themsel They will be feeling the same as you.

Mind you, my experience is that not everyone feels the obligation to do the same. But don't worry.

Yes, that's what I mean. All on same day, eating lunch together, and so on.

Oh, get to know them. Even if you don't get the job, the UK is a pretty small place and you'll run into the same folks over and over. I met two of my research partners (two different projects) at job interviews.

I also met the person I 'pushed' to head one of our departments at a job interview. We really got to know each other as we trashed the uni who was interviewing us. It was the most unprofessional inside candidate interview situation I've ever seen!  But I think that my uni has managed to get a great person.
