How to move from a lecturer to a senior lecturer position (and, eventually, full prof.) level in the UK? What time-frame is realistic for a newly-appointed lecturer?

It depends a bit on your institution.  If you are currently on the Lecturer A scale, then you first of all have to get from A to B, although this is usually a fairly easy jump.  If you are on Lecturer B, then you are already part way there.

Your university should have information about what is required to be promoted to SL.  Look on your HR website and see what you can find out.  The process varies a little from one university to another.  With the RAE coming up, though, you would probably be well advised to focus on your research - good publications, research funding, and some PhD supervision.  Since you are just starting out, you could see whether there are grant schemes in your field that are aimed at new researchers.

If you just want to know in terms of years, you could look at the number of points on the pay scale between where you are now and where you would like to be (SL, professor), but bear in mind that you have to jump through hoops to get from one rank to another, so you could proceed more or less quickly depending how things go.

A Senior Lecturer in a post-1992 or "New "University (former Polytechnic, mainly teaching) is equivalent to Lecturer B in an "Old" (mainly research) University.

An Senior Lecturer in an Old University is roughly equivalent to Principal Lecturer in a New....

Assuming you are interested in old, an eg of critieria and processes, from University of Manchester, is here:
