that's what they should offer, because if you are feeling this anxious about the job, you'll probably commit suicide before tenure.  treatment is called for.

I had four interviews before finally being offered my current position (and it was the best of the four). I found out about what happened at the other institutions over time. Months later I found out that I had been the number 1 choice of one institution but they were mired in red tape. Another one got into a fight about the position requirements and it ended in a failed search for the 4th time and didn't send me official word until 3 months after my interview even though when I left campus I was assured, "next week!". Now that I've been on the other side of the interview search committee situation I understand much better how far out of the control of the candidates it all is. You never know about all the political actions behind the scenes. Also, search committees generally meet when everyone can get together and that might be next week or 3 weeks from now.

This has been good therapy for me. I was promised an answer within "a couple of weeks" and it's now been three weeks. The job is no longer posted on the web site. I assumed I hadn't gotten the job. Maybe there's still hope.
