I was wondering (for searches in history or English lit): if you haven't been asked for a writing sample (assuming the original application didn't include one) is that a pretty firm sign that you're not being considered?

Three (out of eleven) of my interviews are with places that never asked for a writing sample.  Another suggested bringing one along should I get invited on campus.

i think it depends if it is a research-heavy or teaching institution.. .if it is more research -oriented, then they will want to see a writing sample.

None of my interviews (six) have been with schools that asked to see a writing sample, although one of them did request that I bring one to the interview itself.  (Actually, this is a bit worrisome, since I'm wondering if there's anything in the writing sample that eliminates me from consideration -- on the other hand, I'm neither particularly attractive to nor particularly interested in research schools.)
