What are the best sources for faculty salary information? Simple internet searches rarely turn up the right information.

1. the AAUP data set, available via this (Chron) website.
2. public contracts, and sometimes actual salary levels, for state workers (ask the college's librarian)
3. professional associations. eg, the American Econ Assn publishes yearly salary surveys.

If you are interviewing at a state school, the salary information is public, usually. You can look it up. Where, though, is the question -- perhaps only at the school's public library or perhaps on some state website.

I guess I was thinking of online sources (that I can easily access from Japan). Also I must be particularly dense but I can't seem to figure out how to use the AAUP salary search feature here on the Chronicle site. No matter what I enter (university name, job rank, university type, any year, etc.) I get the "no results" message. What am I doing wrong?

It seems to me the Chronicle's salary thing can be kind of picky about using the names of institutions -- if you don't guess exactly how it is listed, it doesn't return any results.
I tend to leave "keyword" blank and just choose the appropriate state. Keyword will work if you are fairly general, but I find it easier to just search by state.

There are apparently no universities in Missouri according to the AAUP salary search. : (
BTW, thanks for the useful set of links. I check them out a bit later (it's 4am here in Japan).

I just saw 35 schools listed.
Use the drop-down menu to find the state your are interested in, not Keyword.
