"I hear the same thing from recruiters of our students. They want someone who brings enthusiasm to the table, and are unimpressed by the low-key students."

Well, perky attitude will take one only so far. The "low key" students are often the best ones--quiet, studious, and probably not a member of 10 campus organizations.

                        Sad but true;
                        no matter where you are or what you do,
                        It seems there's always someone to tell you,
                        what to do or what to wear. HEY, you're to young
                        or he's to old. "I'm sorry sir just doin' what I was told"
                        It seems the kids, they got it right,
                        won't be a tomorrow, just got tonite. As far as work,
                        it's just a job, how they get here; easy Uncle Bob!
                        Can't do the work it such a shame,  yet they won't
                                                 hire a man my age.

Heh.  Posting twice doesn't make it any less spammy.

And registering here to see others' reactions.

I was wondering about that, too.

Is it clear that that's not just a backwards effort at dissertation research?

Or are they going to start a class action suit among all boomers?

Note that If you:

   1. applied for an academic position for which you were qualified;
   2. were age 40 or above at the time of applying;
   3. were not invited for an interview despite your qualifications;
       and
   4. someone under 40 was hired or the position remained unfilled,

you may have been the victim of age discrimination.

REally?  That's all it takes to demonstrate the likelihood of age discrimination?  Cause, we need to talk.  I think I may have been discriminated for: being too young, wearing brown shoes with a dark suit (really, trust me, it worked), having a bad haircut (dudes, you called too late; I had to go to supercuts), being southern, having once owned a Saab, disliking Masons, listening to Marty Robbins, and many many other things.
