With all the adjunct teaching positions advertised and all of the rejections received by those seeking fultime faculty positions, I'm begining to wonder if my newly acquired PhD has any real value.

Anyway, I have been an adjunct for 5 years teaching onground courses, but have recently ventured into the virtual teaching environment.  Has anyone seen jobs requesting full time online instructors?

Thanks

I myself have never seen an ad for an online full timer, but there was an article in the Chron a year or two back about someone who cobbled together a pretty good living by being an online adjunct at 2 or 3 different schools.

I have never seen a full time online job, but when it exists, it will be outsourced to India.

I, too, am adjuncting online, and have never seen an ad for a full time online position.

I'd love to see the article about making ends meet doing fully online teaching.  Right now I'm cobbling together classes from several schools, and always have my feelers out for more/different ones.  I started with very low paying CC work and am trying to "upgrade" to ones that pay better.

I'd be very curious to learn how to find better paying online gigs!

I applied to 3 online adjunct positions and never even received a nibble even though I am finishing my degree (May) at an R1, have 3 years teaching experience, and received 2 TT offers for brick and mortar schools.

What gives?

Some online schools only hire people "working in the field."  This means that accounting is taught by an MBA/CPA who moonlights by doing an online course, or a comp instructor in a regular school who moonlights by teaching comp online.  As a grad student, you are not strictly "working in the field," although you are probably well qualified otherwise.

Kaplan University offers full-time online work. I'm not sure what the pay is or the tenure process (if there is one). But they do accept applications for Asst Prof positions for many departments, do phone interviews, and give a full teaching load + benefits.  http://www.kaplan.edu/careers/default.aspx

What is your field? The only schools/departments that might offer full-time online positions would also offer at least one online degree, so you find schools that do that first.

Here is the URL for the article about a woman making big bucks by adjuncting LOTS of classes online: http://chronicle.com/weekly/v50/i34/34a03101.htm Unfortunately, you have to be a subscriber to view it.

Thanks for the link! I was able to get in through my university library page.

I found this book advertised - and thought it applied to this posting.  The authors claim to be full-time online instructors and making good money (is there bad money?).

I've seen Chair/Director/Coordinator positions for online universities advertised that were fulltime.

I remember reading the article about the Online Queen (no disrespect intended).  Look at the hours she says she puts in.  Fourteen hours a day in a chair and that much time on the computer is a receipe for several health issues - like carpel tunnel syndrome.  More power to her, but she appears to have no life - what is the value in making $90K if you have no life?  Could this be a case of quantity over quality?  The article seems to focus on quantity and if the quoted response is typical, I think the quality of her formative feedback is less than what some schools expect.  Certainly, a quick concise response is appropriate at times and I don't want to read too much into the article in the way of being critical of the professor.  However, $90K is about 45 courses per year and that seems to be a bit much, although in her field, she may be able to pick up that many classes.

WOW!  I couldn't do it.

Concerning patching together a full-time gig, I did so by contacting several local colleges and offering to develop and teach online for them.  I now teach 7 online classes at 4 different institutions (3 CCs and 1 R1 institution).  Don't just wait for the jobs to show up, go ask for them!

While I'm not making the $90K that is quoted in the article, I still make above the average salary for a full-timer in the CC system here.  Even better, though, is the fact that my two kids have a stay-at-home parent who has the flexibility to deal with them during non-standard work days (i.e., snow days, summer vacations, etc.), along with affording me the time to spend daylight hours doing some things that I'd rather do than work :-)
