Diogenes is spot-on.  If you're lucky, your department will have faculty who care about placement rates and who are happy to vet your cover letter, c.v., conduct mock interviews, etc.  If you are truly blessed, go to the teaching resource center on your campus; they usually have c.v.s, cover letters, teaching portfolios, etc., to share with you.  A teaching resource center for faculty is also a wonderful job market resource for ABDs.  Take advantage of it if you have it, or a college nearby has it.  If you don't have anyone to help you, at least take advantage of the c.v. doctor and other tools here on the CHRONICLE, and do Google "academic job"--lots of questions, advice, etc. will come up.  Good luck!

Not to mention the obvious, but those applying for jobs in English should try to avoid grammatical errors and to strive for lucid, even elegant, prose.  The quality of your writing will be discussed by search committees.

I would like to point out that lots of people post as "Anon" in these fora.  In fact, a lot of different people might post as "Anon" in a single thread.  It's a convenient generic handle.  My message to newbies is that you shouldn't assume that all the comments from "Anon" are being posted by the same person.

Perhaps anon is a trinity.
