Well there is a big difference between state universities where there is often a salary scale and private universities where there is not. Teaching load obviously should be discussed. I asked this this morning at an interview I had (most of you on these boards would be shocked the number). Salary only at offer stage unless they mention it. In my current case there are two different academic ranks they could appoint me to (this is outside the US). I know the exact salaries. But there is a large range there.

I must be living in another United States...
I typically brought this up with the highest authority I was visting for the day (who would have a direct say in the matter---Presidents don't really count since they tend not to control salary directly). I brought it up toward the end if they didn't.
I didn't get boat loads of offers...some....so maybe I offended some people? I doubt it. At least not with that question.
So, in sum, you can ask it when interviewing with the person who typically determines faculty salaries. DON'T negotiate or look surprised. Just ask.
