Author Topic: bailing out from adjunct work?  (Read 814 times)

I have a summer adjunct work at a cc that will start very soon (teaching one class).

I am thinking of bailing out because  I got a full-time job offer at another cc.

What would the consequences of this be?
Do you think they"ll be understanding?

Would there be a legal repercussions?
(I did not remember signing any contract when I did the paperwork)

Thanks

no, it's fine to quit.  tell them you got a full-time gig and you have to split. they'll understand. they know being an adjunct is no deal of a job. they'll just have to find someone else to teach the class, which is not your problem. the way adjuncts are paid and treated, they should feel lucky you bothered to tell them.

They would terminate you in an eyeblink--unless you signed a contract, BAIL. (And if you did sign one, what are they going to do, take away your birthday?) Bail nicely, though, with whatever tone of regret you can muster, because you never know when you'll need the bastards.

I don't think they'll give you a problem at all. I did the same thing last year. I was supposed to teach a summer class and two fall classes, and then I got a job at a high school, and I bailed out, and then they took me back when I was interested. Just be honest - they know that a full-time job is much more valuable and needed by many, and they should be happy for you. Also, when I started my CC as an adjunct, a full-timer there quit on the spot cause he got a better offer, and maybe the dean was just nice, but he wished him much luck and was very interesting in knowing all about the other job... I would definitely not want to burn bridges with the CC you're at - but if you're honest and tell them how badly you feel, they should be okay with that. You certainly wouldn't want to turn down a full-time job for this! No one in their right mind would unless all they want to do is part-time without benefits...

As a chair, I agree with the above posters.  I may have to scramble a bit, but I am genuinely happy when my excellent adjuncts get the full-time jobs that a). they deserve, and b). I don't currently have the funding for.

Yes, bail, no prob.  Even those bastards referred to in one of the replies will be happy for you, and you know what? You'll most likely be replaced in the blink of an eye.

Congrats,
CC Dean
