Author Topic: Is it really easier to adjunct at CCs?  (Read 609 times)

I keep reading that it is "easy" or "easier" to land part-time gigs at local CCs than a full-time position.

In my job searching experience, the opposite was true.  I applied to 62 positions, which included everthing from R1s to CCs, full-time tt to one-semester half-time, and resumes/cover letters delivered to a dozen ccs in my home city's area.  I did not land a single adjunct gig from a CC, despite landing five interviews for full-time positions and multiple job offers.

Yeah, I know boo-freaking-hoo.

Seriously, I am not complaining.  I love my job and the town I now call home.  But I am wondering if my experience was atypical or if it depends on your academic area (mine is drama).

I feel we should explore this a little, before we continue to tell people to start with adjuncting at CCs.  I'm not sure it's as easy as people seem to think.  Or, again, maybe it was just my own limited experience.

Applying to adjunct at CC's can be a much easier process than other positions, but it requires a different approach.  Adjunct gigs rarely seem to come from actually applying.  It tends to be much more personal, such as calling or meeting in person with the person scheduling classes during the right time of year.  I have never had a single response from an actual application to adjunct at a CC, but I have always gotten a response if I contacted the person in charge of scheduling directly.  It may be different in some areas of the country, but that's my general experience.

Don't know your area or region, but here at my cc we have such a voracious appetite for adjuncts that about all we do is look to see if your breath fogs a mirror.  Should be no problem to get one of these jobs.
