You might be right in saying that the "pedant" on this thread is an imposter.  I was expecting the original pedant to scold me for my three exclamation marks and the emoticon.

I do agree, however, that seeing a written "like" as a substitute for "approximately" is different from hearing it tossed off in casual speech.  It signals the beginning of a change in our language.  The linguist in me finds the change interesting, but my pedantic side is cringing.

(I realize this sidebar is of no interest to the original poster, but I think the thread is nearing its end, anyway, so let the pedants come out to play!)

I am the original Pedant, or one of the originals, and I cringe at the crimes committed in my screen name.

Anyone who cannot punctuate, spell, or proofread correctly does not deserve to use the Pedant name.
