I wonder if any of you can share the experience about for how long the dean gonna make the big call. The committee discussed and forwarded the recommendation to the dean this past Monday. Do you have any idea what process that still needs to be taken before the dean makes the big call to the candidates?

In my case the chair of the hiring committee called to tell me my name had gone forward. Is that what is in process now for you?

I was told that the committee would meet and forward the recommendation to dean this past Monday when I interviewed on campus last week. I don't know which one of the two interviewed they gonna choose. But the Dean will be the one to call the successful one. I just wonder for how long the dean will be ready to call. And when I can assume I am not the one if no call has been received. Any idea about that?

In the search committee's that I've been a part of we wait until our decision has been signed off on by the appropriate people.  And then we call the candidate.  This process usually takes a couple weeks.   However, I believe in the past there was a case when the candidate was offered the position and the dean refused to sign off on the candidate.

But, in my own job hunting experience, I've always been called (which I'm not sure if usual as I have a limited amount of experience in that area) prior to my name going forward.   So I know to expect a formal offer, providing everything goes according to the search committee's plan.

There are at least a couple of likely possibilities.....

The dean didn't agree with the committee's first choice, so he/she may be waiting for a meeting or more info from the committee on the choice.  I have seen this happen and delay the process 2 or 3 weeks.  (Of maybe the dean wants to talk to one of your references.)

You are not the first choice, and the first choice has asked for time to consider the offer.  That may be a matter of days, maybe a lot more.  (See previous threads on how long has to accept an offer.)

Whatever the reason, best of luck!

In my case, the official letter took a few weeks as it had to go through various administrative channels; but i did hear from the hiring ctee that I was first choice so that was nice, even if not official. Then the negotiation began.

To tell the truth, it sounds like they don't really want you, and they're hiring someone else.
Maybe you weren't quite good enough... or maybe they realize you're not that bright, or something.

Anxious, ignore Optimist.  That kind of snarky comment comes from the dark side.  (Troll hunter alert)
