When I was hired in biology, I had two years of post-doc training, six 1st-authored peer-reviewed articles in national journals (i.e. journals even crappy libraries carry), two in press, and six in review. This was for a SLAC position, not a R1. R1 and SLAC schools will view publication numbers (and placement) differently. What surprised me was how important they were for me to get a job at a SLAC. If you think publications don't matter at liberal arts colleges, think again! The times are changing.
