Author Topic: got an offer for cc tt job - what now?  (Read 1231 times)

I just got a phone call offering me a tt job at a cc.

The dean immediately asks if I'll accept. He did not mention any specifics like figures or details.

Is this customary for a cc tt job offer?
(The website does have a table of 10 months faculty salary but I don't know where I fall in the range. Shall I assume I fall as STEP I)

Is there room for negotiation for salary or anything else in cc hiring?

I am a total novice at this so I actually already accept verbally in my excitement. I do want the job but my friend says I should've acted cool and talk figures first.

Should call them back for figures? Should I just wait for more info?

What's the etiquette when getting a phone call like this?

Thanks

Dazed,
Congratulations!

I think it is okay to accept the offer (I did when I was in similar circumstances a month ago).

At CCs, salary placement is usually not negotiable. It is based on your education and experience.

Call their HR office for details.

Good luck in your new position.

how about conditions and duties as outlined in the contract (also available online).

Is anything negotiable?

Did you ask for clarification or ask any further questions in the process of accepting the job offer?

Thanks

I have not heard of much successful negotiating at the cc level.  There are steps one is placed on based on education and experience.

Until you get the written offer you are still free to negotiate, change your mind, etc.  But I'm not clear--it sounds like this offer was a surprise.  You did interview there, didn't you?  I'm assuming you did your homework, have investigated the department where you'd be teaching, met future colleagues, asked questions, etc.

Yes I did interview and have found out as much as I can about the institution.

But I am just wondering about the fine print.
Am I allowed to ask questions about the details of the contract and request funding for this and that?
Let's say funds to start a certain program or collections of teaching materials or teaching tool?

Thanks

You can always ask.  In a polite questioning (not demanding) manner, with reasons why such things would improve you as a teacher.

"as we discussed blah blah, I am interested in doing blah blah, would there be resources available etc. etc.... such as..."

I was hired in a t-t position with the understanding (brought up only during my final interview) that I would be the newspaper advisor.  I didn't ask for funding, but I certainly got it and created quite a professional newspaper.

But unless you have expertise that is going to bring something needed to your cc, I wouldn't hold my breath.  Do you have something specific in mind?  If you were clearer, I and others might feel more conviction about letting you know what your chances are.

For the CC I will be working at in the fall (Yay!), I got the unofficial offer from the search chair (he's also the dean).  There was no mention of money or any other details.  Later, I got the official offer from the HR, which included every detail of pay, how to get more pay, when to do papers, and so on.  There is a specific procedure to go through for many CC's, and I'm sure you'll get more information eventually.  Often, they assume step 1, then adjust based on prior experience (like for every certain number of units I have taught, I get one year credited experience).  You may be able to find further information in their faculty manual if it is online.  Sometimes this includes specific information on salary placement, standard equipment provided, or even more details.  Congratulations, and I wish you the best!

Thank you everybody for the comments. They were really helpful.

Yes, I did find salary range and other pertinent employment information on the website.

What out for tt at cc.  It means nothing.  I travelled across the country for a tt at a cc and thanks to state budget cuts and the fact that I was still "probationary faculty," meant that I was the first to go.  And tenure doesn't really exist at a cc...it just means you go into 3-year evaluation cycles for the rest of your career.  Sorry to sound negative, but I got burned burned burned.  Beware.
