Which are the usual or typical questions the hiring department would ask us during the campus interview or the phone interview?

Thanks.

I highly recommend the following books for this information:

The Academic Job Search Handbook, by Mary Morris Heiberger and Julia Miller Vick.

Knock 'Em Dead, by Martin Yate.

I agree with Spork. Martin John Yate's Knock 'Em Dead is a great source for such questions. I have used the book to prepare my undergraduates for job interviews.

You should also take advantage of an opportunity that most candidates fumble. When the interviewers ask you whether you have questions for them, you should show off credentials that haven't yet come up in the interview.

Interviewer: Do you have any questions for us?

Great Candidate: Yes. We haven't yet had a chance to talk about (fill in the black with something that you do well). I've done a lot of work with ____. How might my experience be of use to your department?

Answers such as that give the interviewers more reasons to hire you.

You should also talk with your dissertation director about interview questions. A part of your director's job is to help you find a job. Make use of that person's experience.

I'd like to thank Spork and Brent Chesley for all the good suggestions and ideas.

I'd very much appreciate some more specific information about interview questions in the humanities field -- especially in foreign language -- as well as the expectations of the hirers regarding the answers we give. What kind of answers are they waiting for?

Also, is there anyone who can talk about their experience at the MLA meeting?

Thanks. Have a good summer.

I don't have specifics on your follow-up questions, but I have a question that you might like to ask your interviewers: What is the department's (school's, college's, etc.) commitment to the foreign language that you teach?

The reason I bring this up is that I've seen a lot of universities advertise programs in languages that were taught by annually-hired doctoral students who were getting their degrees at other institutions. The majority of these students were not linguistically trained -- they spoke the language but had no language teaching experience.

You forgot inappropriate questions about sexual habits!  Or does that fall under the stress interview question category?

Sounds like a crap website to me.

When they ask about your Warts, you know they're serious.

There's no such thing as inappropriate questions about sexual habits. The committee has the right to know.

HR won't let us ask.  So we usually just subject our applicants to a practical exam on the matter.
