Greetings -

Given the tenure-track hiring environment job seekers are experiencing, I am wondering what the group's opinion is on applying for "collateral" positions.

Should someone with a computer science Ph.D. (from a school of science) apply for a position in a business school requiring a "doctorate in Information Systems, Information Technology, Management Information Systems or related field"?

Is it worth even applying for a position that does not explicitely state my major?

Thanks,
G. DS

I'd suggest taking a look at the school's catalogue and seeing whether the courses offered by the department are (mostly) those you would be qualified to teach and interested in teaching as well. If so, then I would point that out in your letter of application.

I think, in general, that mentions of a "related field" are owing to many Ph.D.'s having backgrounds that are not adequately or completely described by the title of their degree. For example, some computer scientists would have the background (coursework, research, professional experience) to teach in a business department, but some won't.
