(saw this in another portion of the colloquy)

because I refuse to give easy extra credit assignments that allow you to fail everything you are supposed to do for this class and still get a passing grade.

I usually have an optional extra credit assignment.  I began this as a general policy years ago when I taught only adult ed, and the students needed to get a minimum grade in order to get tuition reimbursement.  

The type of assignment varies by course, but I never give more than 10 points.  I don't usually have lots of takers, but about half the time they are A students looking for "insurance" for a good grade.

If you have difficulty completing the assigned work in an acceptable fashion, trying to do additional work is unlikely to solve the problem. To improve grades on future exams /assignments you might wish to consider (writing centre, study groups, additional reading,
attending class when it is not too inconvenient, etc) If, however, you do not think that you can get the grade you want without extra credit, there are still X days left in the drop period.
