I am putting myself on the job market in a few months. Should I use my work or private e-mail account as a point of contact? I understand the pros and cons of each, but wonder what others would do.

Because I'm in a freelance/arts field, it's quite common for artsy-academic types to have their own websites, such as artist@artist.com. When I send out letters, I use this e-mail address. Would something like this work for you?

Use a private email account with your full name in the email account name--JoeBlow5589@yahoo.com for example.

The search committee wants to know who it is sending the email to and who it receives email from. Having your name in the account makes things much easier (as opposed to trying to figure out who booger_eater@yahoo.com really is).

Also, the committee can get cautious when sending email to a business email address (especially in terms of wondering who will have access to the email).

Good luck!

Maybe it's because I'm in new media but I think that everyone should have their own domain name and not use hotmail or yahoo. Owning a domain name and having web hosting is pretty darn cheap, and SuzyQ@suzyq.me is certainly more professional than SuzyQ@hotmail.com

IMHO
just my 02p worth
Your mileage may vary
