Pentostomids make great pets, the only downside is you really need a crocodile's nasal cavity to keep them in. The best part is that they never get parasites because they are the parasite.

Yes to herding dogs.  They are smart AND they put all of their squeaky toys back in one place when they are done playing with them.  

Just one thing about border collies:  they need lots of exercise or they get destructive.  Just ask my sofa........
