Gerbils, all the way.  Gerbils are cuter, more intelligent, have the ability to be curious, and are more social.  Hamsters just hog the spotlight.

Gerbils, baby, Gerbils.  That's my vote.

My barn cats have decimated all the wild mice. Do you think they'd rather a gerbil or hamster for Christmas?

What about squirrels? I like squirrels. Chipmunks too.

The Duck feels right at home in this thread.  I will attempt to address all of the scintillating questions posed here.

1) Gerbils.  Totally.  They are smart, curious, and cute.  Hamsters are fatter, stupid, and pouchy.

2) For a barn cat, I would therefore recommend a hamster.  Or two.  They are tastier than gerbils, I'll give you that.

3) Squirrels are moderately interesting to watch.  Chipmunks too skittish.  Both tasty, especially as road-kill.

Now my own question, burning deep inside many a Chronicler's brain:
What do BEAGLES prefer to eat??????

Please tell me.  Somebody just gave me one and I have no idea what to feed it...or should I just pass it on?

Duck, watch out! My barn cats are getting big. Big enough to take on a duck. Not to mention my two dogs--Labrador retrievers.

Don't worry about a beagle. They like pinkies best.

Well, I for one can't wait to see how THIS thread degenerates into relgio-political cage-match.

Guinea pigs! They make little 'e-e-e-e-e' sounds.

Yeah, but did you ever get a boy squirrel climbing up your window screen? Quite a view. Especially fun when the kids are home to see.

Do you mean which one would evolve faster?

My dog really likes the squirrels, but she can never catch them.  I don't think she'd knowwhat to do if she did.  She practices on the cats, but they are armed and dangerous.  So, she settles for rolling in road kill.  Possums are popular around here.

Threads like this bunch of nonsense are going to result in this board being eliminated just like the old race and gender board.

Lighten up, already!  It's very late in the semester, we are all a little punch drunk.  Everyone needs a little levity now and then.

Back to the thread:  Possums make pretty good stew, but they tend to be a little greasy.  Squirrels are hard to skin, but they are GREAT fried.  And, of course, beagles make the best hot dogs.

Does anyone remember Howard Stern talking about hamsters?  I'm picturing a paper towel tube....

Perhaps I'm biased, but I'm afraid I must disagree with the original post.

Without a doubt, hamsters are infinitely cuter than the greasy-furred rat-tailed grey-colored varments called "gerbils".

We're orange and fluffy and can stuff oodles of sunflower seeds in our cheeks.  We're also a little tubby, which many humans find quite endearing.

I will give gerbils a little credit: they're great jumpers and can chew through cardboard tubes in record time.

But come on, people.  As serious academics, surely we all recognize that hamsters rule and always have.  Now if you don't mind, I must bathe myself for the 18th time this evening...

How come no one mentioned my love for Gerbils?
