1) standard of living
2) at big institution, unless youre a star, you will always be mr nobody, thirs, or maybe fourth in line. At small institution, you're your own boss, and can do what you like. You can still build something (e.g. a research team), rather than just continuing what others have started. Frankly, I prefer to be my own or the boss in a small, somewhat lowerpaying dept, than to be no. 3 in a big, better paying one.
