I couldn't find the other thread, but there is a real shortage of truck drivers. Go to truck driving school and get your license and you'll make a pile of money.

Hehe, been there done that! :-)

Actually, what's easier to do for a starving academic is driving a limo. Basically, on an average 4-hour run, you spend 40 minutes driving and the rest of the time waiting while your passengers are having a good time. Bring a laptop or a set of papers to grade and you'll be fine (otherwise you'll die of boredom).

The hourly pay sucks ( < $10/hour) but you get great tips. A wedding should net you at least $100 in cash, and a drunk bachelor(ette) party can be worth much more. Driving a hooker around is even better but if she gets busted you can be in trouble (forced to testify if there is a trial, etc - it's better to keep the partition up and not think about what she's doing back there). Other enterprising souls carry a case of various liquors in the trunk and sell the bottles to clients at exorbitant prices ($50/bottle).

I made little "extra" - a few vodka sales after hours, that sort of thing - but I mostly treated my limo job as a chance to read, grade and think about research away from my noisy roommates.
