Student Body
The University of Florida is the fourth largest university in the United States with more than 48,000 students (including about 10,000 graduate students). UF has the eighth largest budget (around $1.9 billion) and is considered one of the top public universities in the US. UF ranks first among public institutions and second among all institutions for the number of National Merit Scholars enrolled. In 2005, the average incoming freshman had a GPA of 3.9, an SAT score of 1340, and an ACT composite of 29. UF's freshmen retention rate of 92 percent also speaks to the outstanding quality of the university's entire academic experience, from the many campus organizations and activities to quality teaching and class retention. More than 2,000 freshmen and sophomores participate in the honors program, which offers 90 to 100 honors courses per semester.
UF's "Gator Nation" represents all Florida counties, all 50 states, and more than 100 countries. The ratio of women to men is 52:48. Of the 48,000 students, 21 percent are graduate students, and 7 percent are in a professional degree programs including dentistry, law, medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine. Approximately 24 percent of the student body represents minority populations with 7.4 percent African Americans, 9.9 percent Hispanics, and 6.5 percent Asian-Americans or Pacific Islanders.
Programs & Accreditation
The University of Florida is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, which consists of the top 62 public and private universities in North America, and only a few offer more programs on a single campus than UF. The university comprised of 21 colleges offering more than 100 undergraduate majors and more than 200 graduate-degree programs including the only dentistry and veterinary medicine programs in Florida. The university is ranked 13 among all public and private universities in the number of U.S. patents awarded in 2000.
Faculty
More than 4,000 distinguished faculty members with outstanding reputations for their teaching, research, and service call the University of Florida home. The faculty attracted more than $458 million in research and training grants in 2002-2003. In 2000-2001, University-of-Florida-based technologies brought in a record $28.7 million in royalty and licensing income. Florida is ranked seventh among all universities for licensing income.
Florida currently has 60 Eminent Scholar Chairs, positions funded at more than $1 million each to attract nationally- and internationally-recognized scholars. A variety of other endowed professorships help attract prominent faculty. More than two dozen faculty members belong to the National Academies of Science and/or Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, or a counterpart in another nation. Also, in a national ranking of total Fulbright Awards for 2001-02, Florida stands 9th among AAU public universities, with 13 awards.
