Founded in 1899, Appalachian State University is a preeminent university combining the best attributes of a rural, liberal arts campus with high quality graduate education and research in select areas. Undergraduate teaching is emphasized with small class sizes, extensive co-curricular activities, undergraduate research opportunities and strong faculty-student mentoring.

Set in a unique mountain environment, the Appalachian experience includes the rich cultural and recreational benefits of our surroundings and a conscientious approach to stewardship and leadership in sustainable practices and policies. To enable Appalachian students to succeed in a 21st century global society, the university provides multiple opportunities for students to interact with their own interest groups as well as other cultures.

A member of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system, Appalachian offers nearly 140 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, Appalachian attracts students from 45 states and more than 36 foreign countries.  Enrollment totaled 16,970 (on and off- campus enrollment for fall 2009.

Appalachian offers more than 140 undergraduate and graduate major
programs through its College of Arts and Sciences, College of Fine and
Applied Arts, Reich College of Education, Walker College of Business,
University College, Hayes School of Music, College of Health Sciences
and Cratis D. Williams Graduate School. Appalachian also offers a
doctorate of education.

The university is involved in innovative partnerships with public schools, community colleges, business and industry and a variety of professional organizations that provide opportunities for students to transform classroom learning into real-world experience. An off-campus facility in New York City enables students and faculty to extend their scholarly work in a vibrant urban center. The university also has exchange programs with 41 universities in 17 countries.
