New York University announced Wednesday that it is creating a for-profit subsidiary to develop and sell continuing-education courses that will be delivered on line.

With $1.5-million in start-up money from the university, NYU On-line Inc. -- as the venture will be called -- hopes to compete with the University of Phoenix and other companies that sell training courses to working adults.
