Mathematician at New York U. Wins $980,000 Abel Prize

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters announced on Thursday that Peter D. Lax, an emeritus professor of mathematics at New York University, has won the Abel Prize in Mathematics. The prize, which is worth about $980,000, is considered an honor equivalent to the Nobel Prize, which has no mathematics category.
