The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

For years now, people have fulfilled the prophecy Ms. Rand wrote of: "accepting and cherishing the mediocre, and destroying or ignoring genius." The entire community of philosophy embraces the work of "great thinkers" whom Rand has clearly refuted and replaced. Does this matter to any of them? It never does. Universities go on preaching thinkers such as Descartes and Kant, while works of great human importance such as The Virtue of Selfishness go unnoticed. What will it take, I wonder? Will the motor of the world have to be halted for it to take notice? When will man realize that the very premises that it stands for are, in fact, not working for him, but against him? I am not preaching total alliance with Ms. Rand. I am merely saying that it is time to stop embracing foolish philosophy and time to get real.
