The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

This morning in my anthropology class, I commented on the controversy surrounding Rigoberta Menchu and whether everything that she said was completely accurate.

I was vehemently attacked! I believe that truth in print is essential, especially when what is written can alter the way someone sees the world. In my opinion, if Rigoberta lied then it would be the equivalent of someone like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lying about key moments in the U.S. Civil Rights movement or learning that Anne Frank never wrote a diary!

When my conscience is awakened, let it be by truth and not falsehood. My generation (20 somethings) has been lied to enough by those that claim to be our leaders.
