The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

I have worked for many years in support of the Mayan people, both in Chiapas, Mexico and Guatemala and find this intellectual debate over Ms. Menchú's veracity to be very disturbing. The genocide of indigenous peoples over the last 500 years is mind-boggling. If she has lied, then it pales in comparison how the white man has lied to the Indians in the Americas!

Her words speak the truth even if some of the events she mentioned did not happen exactly as described. She has made the world aware of these atrocities which we as so-called "civilized" peoples have committed in the name of whatever cause we use to justify these actions.

It is an honor for me to have created a Web page dedicated to her because I deeply admire what she stands for: the rights which native peoples everywhere deserve.

Homage to Rigoberta Menchú

Perhaps I may sound a bit biased, but I base that on the knowledge I have, which I feel justifies these views. If one takes the time to read my entire Web site, I think you will understand why I feel as I do. It brings tears to my eyes every time I read these pages; that is how strongly I feel about these issues.
