
I think Dr. Jeffrey's comments reflect the opinion of many supporters of Menchú's book. Let's not forget that it's her opponents, not her supporters, who initiated this firefight by failing to make the distinction he makes very eloquently in his last sentence.
Many of her supporters, unfortunately, have found themselves painted into a corner whereby they feel compelled to "justify" something in terms not of their own --or its own-- choosing. This may, in the long run, be a tactical error, but it's certainly understandable.
