
As a grad student I, too, read I, Rigoberta Menchu. Of course no one suggested that it might be less than a pure narrative of remembered personal experience. This does not lessen its impact. Stoll makes his case that it is not. This does not make him a supporter of military juntas. There is a lesson here: As a seeker of truth, however it might be imagined, trust only those things that can verified to be true, and leave your biases at the door. The Menchú-Stoll story will hopefully remind us of this.
