The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

As a student, I think it would be best to ask the students what they think would be best in this situation. By the college level, we are all pretty able to make decisions for ourselves, if we are given well-rounded information. As a student on campus, I was approached by a member of what I believe to be a cult, only I did not know it at the time. Had I been given information about this movement, known as International Church of Christ, I would have been able to politely tell the young lady who approached my friends and I, "no thank you." But since I had not been given much information about them, I checked out their church, and almost got involved.

Since my own experience with the Church of Christ on campus, I have talked to many friends who have been pretty much pressured by Church of Christ recruiters into meeting regularly with their people. I believe if these students had all the information, they would then be able to make a well-informed decision. It really scares me to think of the people who do not get all the information about this group before they are recruited by them. It is the University's responsibility to make information about supposed cults on campus available to students, because this is happening on their campus.
