I'd like to re-affirm something I suggested earlier, which seems to have gotten lost in this debate. If universities and colleges were really doing their job, they'd be helping young people hone the intellectual skills --i.e., analytical reasoning, critical thinking-- to identify the "real-world" root causes of problems, and then work to change and solve them.
It's a sad commentary on the state of higher "learning" in the U.S. when college campuses have become breeding grounds for superstition, spiritualism, and other alternatives to clear thinking.
