The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

Actually, my response to Dan Carnevales's suggestion (from its chairman) that the Task Force is really "studying all types of groups, not just religious ones, that have adverse effects on students and their families" was a bit stronger than indicated. I prefaced my remarks with the comment, "They are lying!"

The Task Force did not call one expert witness on any of the following groups that have adverse effects on University students and their parents:

fraternities (hazing, binge drinking, death)
-drug pushers (addiction, bad grades, death)
-sports teams (serious injury, bad grades)
-gay groups (AIDS, problems for parents)
-Marxist groups (violent revolution)
-prostitution rings
-gun clubs
-black separate groups
-white separatist groups
-businesses that sell alcohol to students
-purveyors of pornography
-tobacco companies
-tattoo and piercing parlors
-doctors that prescribe speed and steroids
-teachers who sell grades for sex
-booster groups that corrupt athletes
-rap groups and their record companies
-video game companies
-credit card companies that encourage debt
-D & D enthusiasts and the chess club

Studying all types of groups indeed! I challenge the chairman to name three groups studied by his task force that are not religious in nature. Perhaps the task force should be investigated for practicing "heavenly deception."
