The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

University officials need to inform and educate students as to the purpose and mission of all student organizations that are available on campus. That does not mean limiting, soliciting or endorsing membership of any one organization. As individual university faculty and staff we may not agree with a cult or organization's mission, but we are in position to educate students through challenge and support as they explore their own values. A college campus is a microcosm of a larger diverse society. Students need to be educated, not sheltered. The more we make decisions for our students the more we are becoming "in-local-parentis". Should we guide and educate, yes. Should we limit their experiences and ability to make their own decision, no.
