The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

Truth invites investigation; it has nothing to hide. If one believes they are believing, practicing, and teaching the Truth, they will not be afraid of the microscope of scrutiny.

Whether one claims to be an atheist, an Orthodox Jew, a Muslim, a Moonie, or a conservative Christian, he/she needs to be ready to defend what they believe. If it can't be defended, then maybe it needs to be given up.

Why would anyone want to belong to a religious system, whether a cult or denomination, that cannot or will not defend itself? Why would I be afraid of being asked questions about what I believe? Why would I not be willing to defend my faith?

This is a great country. We have freedom. I have the right to believe what I want and you have the right to argue against it. But I need to be ready to defend what I believe, not threaten a law-suit against someone who might question me.

-- Bob Buchanon, evangelist, Eastside Church of Christ (posted 8/19, 4:45 p.m., E.D.T.)
