The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

The University of Alberta is a major research-intensive university with some 25,000 undergraduate students and 4,300 graduate students. I am interested in following this discussion and participating from time to time. My work as Ombudsperson brings me into contact with students who are facing severe stress, largely because of the incredibly unbalanced nature of the student-supervisor, or student-department relationship. Fortunately, the U of A has a strong appeals policy and a strong network of ombudservices. Also, our Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is very good a giving unbiased and equitable judgments. Nonetheless, I am curious about the experiences of others.

-- Saloni Negi, Vice President (Academic), and Ombudsperson for graduate students, Graduate Students' Association, University of Alberta (posted 1/21, 9:43 a.m., E.S.T.)
