The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

Hasn't anybody had a good experience in grad school? I have studied in the psychology departments of two ivy-league universities, and haven't experienced anything like what these commentators are describing. My advisors have been supportive of my research, treating me like a colleague, not an indentured servant. They have also taken an interest in me personally. I have never had to plead for some of their time. It's no doubt true, and regrettable, that some people have negative experiences in grad school, but let's not give the impression that everybody does.
