The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

Abuse at elite, or "non-elite" institutions has and will continue to occur to graduate students. But after reading many of the comments written by other Ph.D. holders I wish to say it seems I was the lucky one. At the University of Memphis' marketing department I was met with unbelievable hard tasks (at least for me), but was not treated like many of those who have voiced their horror stories.

Besides denigrating those professors who should not be "mentoring" other human beings, be sure to pass along a positive comment to those who were an asset to the maturation process. The "good" professors would love to hear it, and it is easier to improve upon the good than change the bad...unless cutting out the cancer is an option.

-- Robert M. Peterson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, University of Portland (posted 11/3, 10:37 a.m., E.S.T.)
